Black Buster at Sydney Film Festival
Last month I finished working on my first professional film composing job, writing the score and featured music for a short comedy/musical called Black Buster. The film was directed by Sio Tusa, produced by Andrew Arbuthnot and was funded by the ABC, Screen QLD and Screen Australia's Indigenous Branch. Black Buster will be premiered at the Sydney Film Festival next month, and will be broadcast on ABC TV at a later date.
I had a great time working on this. The budget allowed for a studio recording with a six piece band (all members of the Divergence Jazz Orchesrta) and I learnt a heap working with engineer Geir Brillian Gunnarsson. I wrote a variety of music including a swinging song-and-dance number, some kinky funk, Kungfu fighting music and some ska and rock tunes for source music.

Welcome
Thank you to Ashley Marsh-Croft for the set-up and design.
2011 has been a very busy year for me full of new projects and ventures. To name a few: I was commissioned to compose three new works by the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra as the 2011 composer-in-residence, and they performed 5 of my works at the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth. I undertook a Grad Certificate in Screen Music at the Australian Film Television and Radio School and composed and recorded the music for two AFTRS film productions. I am now a represented composer with the Australian Music Centre who are publishing my sheet music, and my string quartet was shortlisted for workshop and performance at the Australian String Quartet's National Composer's Forum.
2012 should be an equally exciting year- to start it off I will be working on my first short film as a commissioned composer, and I am finally getting my act together and will be putting together a big band (with trombonist Paul Weber) to perform my large ensemble jazz compositions around Sydney.
Stay tuned!
