Divergence with Chelsea McBride at Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival
Direct from the Perth International Jazz Festival, saxophonist Chelsea McBride brings her harmonically layered, infectiously energetic work to a big band setting under the auspices of Jenna Cave’s Divergence Jazz Orchestra. The native Canadian won theToronto Arts Foundation’s Emerging Jazz Artist Award, and toured her work across Canada and North America. Her debut release as Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School took a modernist, orchestral approach to jazz, charting the journey of a daydreaming commuter - a bustling, polyrhythmic jostle of interlocking instrumentation, alive with the energy and distraction of city life.
Her Place - for solo viola
Listen to the first recording of Jenna's 2014 composition for solo viola, Her Place. The piece is dedicated to Jenna's Mum, who spent a number of years in the 1970s living and playing traditional fiddle music in the Shetland Islands. When Jenna began composing the piece the sounds of Shetland fiddle music which she had grown up hearing her mother play subconsciously worked their way into the music. Sheet music is available for purchase through the Australian Music Centre
In this recording Her Place was performed by Dawn Bennett.
