Divergence album reviewed on 'All About Jazz'

Jack Bowers, resident big band expert who contributes to international jazz blog 'All About Jazz' had some nice things to say when he reviewed our 2013 album  'The Opening Statement' on the site this month. Thanks Jack. Read his thoughts here.

"Divergence Jazz Orchestra is remarkably strong and consistently pleasing... Cave writes with depth and maturity well beyond her years, a virtue not lost on the DJO, which carries out her wishes to the letter."

Divergence J.O.'s Next Gig

Come and see what the new generation in Australian jazz has to offer.   The Divergence Jazz Orchestra returns to “the Wall” at the Bald Faced Stag on November 11 for another exciting concert of all-Australian jazz. They will debut music by Steve Newcomb (Brisbane/NY), Elliot Hughes (Melbourne) and Bill Motzing (Sydney), alongside pieces by Jenna Cave.

With an average age of just 23 years, Divergence is made up of 18 of Sydney’s most talented young jazz musicians. Together they’ve been impressing audiences with their high energy super-tight ensemble playing and an infectious sense of groove.

She has composed music for film and TV productions funded by the ABC, Screen Australia and SBS, and has been the recipient of various awards, prizes and scholarships for her composing work and studies.

Paul Weber is a jazz trombone graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (2011). A committed section player, Weber payed his dues as lead trombone in the Sydney Con Big Band (2007-2011), Judy Bailey’s Jazz Connection (2007 to present), and the Sussudio Big Band (2003-2008). A recipient of the prestigious Big Brother Memorium scholarship, Weber travelled to the UK in 2011 to study with Jiggs Whigham, Gordon Campbell and Mark Nightingale; as well as sitting in on rehearsals and a recording session of the BBC Big Band.

TAKE IT IN COLOUR- Digital Release

This digital release is an EP version of Take it in Colour which was released on CD in 2006. The new EP version features three compositions by Jenna Cave (composed at the age of 21) and three works by Sally Greenaway from the original album on its 6 year anniversary. Take it in Colour was a collaborative project spearheaded by Sally Greenaway in 2005, who at the time was a jazz piano student at the Australian National University. Funded by grants from the ANU Fine Arts Student Association and the Friends of the ANU School of Music, the album was comprised of jazz compositions by Sally Greenaway, Jenna Cave, Fionna Tamin and Phoebe Juskevics. It featured performances by 24 then jazz students of the ANU School of Music (including stand out performances by Michael Azzopardi and Niels Rosendahl) and was beautifully recorded and mixed by Niven Stines.

Black Buster at Sydney Film Festival

Last month I finished working on my first professional film composing job, writing the score and featured music for a short comedy/musical called Black Buster. The film was directed by Sio Tusa, produced by Andrew Arbuthnot and was funded by the ABC, Screen QLD and Screen Australia's Indigenous Branch. Black Buster will be premiered at the Sydney Film Festival next month, and will be broadcast on ABC TV at a later date.

I had a great time working on this. The budget allowed for a studio recording with a six piece band (all members of the Divergence Jazz Orchesrta) and I learnt a heap working with engineer Geir Brillian Gunnarsson. I wrote a variety of music including a swinging song-and-dance number, some kinky funk, Kungfu fighting music and some ska and rock tunes for source music.

See the film's featured song here: Never Noticed You Before (Blackbuster)

For more updates feel free to follow the Blackbuster facebook page.

Divergence Jazz Orchestra and Upcoming Performances

Paul Weber and I have been busy getting charts and personnel ready for the first rehearsal of our new band, the Divergence Jazz Orchestra (previously known as the Lines of Flight). The band will be playing all of my music, and we have some really great young players from the Sydney jazz scene on board.

There are a few other bands around Australia who are playing my charts at the moment.

The Daryl McKenzie Jazz Orchestra will include two of my charts commissioned by WAYJO in 2011 in their next gig-

Monday February 27, 8-11pm

The Apartment, 401 Little Bourke St, Melbourne

A new band starting in Newcastle the Wednesday Night Big Band will feature four of my charts at their premiere gig.

Wednesday 19th of April, 8-10pm

Lizzotte's, 31 Morehead St, Lambton, Newcastle

Film Music Commission

I am currently working on my first commission for a short film. The film is a comedy musical, which means I get to write featured songs as well as the score. It's a great little film and I've had lots of fun working on the project so far. It  is being developed and funded by Screen Australia's Indigenous Branch.

Australian Music Centre

As I am a represented composer with the Australian Music Centre, they have now published selection of my sheet music which available for purchase or loan (members only). Some of my recordings are also available as MP3 downloads through the AMC.

Welcome

Welcome to my new website!

Thank you to Ashley Marsh-Croft for the set-up and design.

2011 has been a very busy year for me full of new projects and ventures. To name a few: I was commissioned to compose three new works by the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra as the 2011 composer-in-residence, and they performed 5 of my works at the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth. I undertook a Grad Certificate in Screen Music at the Australian Film Television and Radio School and  composed and recorded the music for two AFTRS  film productions. I am now a represented composer with the Australian Music Centre who are publishing my sheet music, and my string quartet was shortlisted for workshop and performance at the Australian String Quartet's National Composer's Forum.

2012 should be an equally exciting year- to start it off I will be working on my first short film as a commissioned composer, and I am finally getting my act together and will be putting together a big band (with trombonist Paul Weber) to perform my large ensemble jazz compositions around Sydney.

Stay tuned!
